"Nevermore"

I loved working on this little piece! It is 12" x 12" and, yes, I'm back to hand stitching parts of my pieces. I actually started it as a possible entry with a play on words with scale, but I wasn't happy with it in time for the entry so I made it more of my own. :) I particularly identify with ravens and blackbirds so it was a natural choice of subject for me. In a number of weeks I'm about to embark on a wonderful journey - we'll be moving and I will start the adventure of being a full time artist. The piece says how I feel at the moment and is as if he is swinging the cage attempting to escape to fly into the wide blue open. The curtains were from some hand dyed fabric I bought one year at QSDS and the rest of the subject matter was painted with watered down acrylics. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

I, like many others, have been very affected by the disaster in Japan and am still trying to process that into visual form. I hope to create pieces in the future about this topic. I send every Japanese citizen healing and peace.

"New Light of Day" :)

Hello everyone. :)
This piece has had a long journey. It began with 9/11. Two months after the attack I began trying to piece together some semblence of understanding and created the gold silk portion of this piece. It is sewn with organza and I then burned through the organza with a soldering iron. I had pinned fabrics behind it, but it never felt or looked right to me. I kept it with my fabrics and unfinished pieces for ten years, pulling it out from time to time, still never satisfied. Finally, the year of the anniversary of 9/11 it came to me. I have a much better stash to play with now and the image just fell together. After the move I'm looking forward to setting up a better setup for photographing my work, but I think the photos show how I deviated from my own norm - no hand stitching! This piece along with the pear piece are going to be entered into an upcoming show. I'll keep you posted to see if they made it in! :)

Back of the work
I thought the back of the work was really interesting....and it gets me thinking about the upcoming SAQA call for entry involving structures.

Latest Creation "Transformation"

Today I finished a piece to enter an upcoming show that I'm very pleased with. I started it at a very difficult time in my life as I was dealing with the aftermath of a divorce, had gone through surgeries, cancer scares and I just was lost. It now relates to more than I anticipated, based on the added experiences I've had since the original idea came to me. I have added handwork to provide added texture and a wide machine stitched border and now the piece feels more like it should be. May we all find the strength to rise up from our sorrows and conitnue on our paths.

On a separate note, I'm very excited about the happenings with Fiber Artists of Hope. Our current show, The Unspoken Truth About Color: A Dialogue in Art Quilts about Racism,  is in NJ and will be traveling. I hope to see it in Chicago in April. The pieces by my fellow artists is amazing and I'm so proud of them for addressing issues in their work that are so important.
The upcoming projects sound so exciting I can't wait to start working out the ideas for them! For now, I'm going to attempt to make a dress - mind you, I haven't made clothes since high school...yikes. We'll see how that goes!
Love and Light to you all,
juno
